13. Climate action
Climate Change is an important challenge for the 21st century. Our common response will not only shape the way we will live and do businesses now and in the coming decades, but will also offer numerous opportunities for socioeconomic progress. Combating climate change contributes to protect our world’s biodiversity and humanity. For many years, bpost has invested in its corporate responsibility management with a significant focus on Carbon Management. Those undertakings have been recognized through excellent results in various international rankings such as the CDP Climate Performance Leadership Index and the International Post Corporation environmental ranking. Indeed, we believe we have a common responsibility to actively continue to engage in global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and to help lead the global transition to a low-carbon, climate resilient economy. bpost has set its volontary CO2 reduction target to -45% by 2020 We ensure that bpost will continue its voluntary actions to reduce its environmental and carbon footprint in the coming years, contributing to keeping global temperature under 2 degrees Celsius.

4. Quality education
bpost supports the drive towards improved literacy. This commitment is put into practice by giving financial support to the bpost Literacy Fund, which was established in 1997 and managed by the King Baudouin Foundation. Since 2009 we have given the fund a new impetus by donating part of the revenue from the sale of Christmas stamps. In the past four years the Fund has received over 1,500,000 EUR, which has enabled it to support new literacy projects run by various organizations.
12. Responsible consumption and production
bpost was the first postal operator and the first communication channel in Belgium to work on the development of a tool to measure the carbon footprint generated during the complete lifecycle of an addressed Direct Mail campaign. Using the Carbon Meter customers can measure the carbon footprint generated by their mail and parcels flows, so that they can take well-informed decisions that minimize this environmental impact (in terms of type of paper, use of cardboard, size and inks, for example). To complete this low-carbon offering, bpost gives customers the possibility to offset the carbon emissions generated in the delivery of their mail items. This offering, in joint initiative with CO2logic, raises financing for projects to cut greenhouse emissions in emerging countries. Every tonne of carbon dioxide reduced through these projects produce many socioeconomic benefits. In 2015 the carbon produced in delivering more than 157 million customer letters was offset. bpost also offset all carbon emissions of letters and magazines sent to its customers and employees (18 million items per year). The carbon-neutral mail initiative offset 2,528 tonnes of carbon in 2015.
17. Partnerships for the goals
Supporting voluntary employee initiatives bpost launched an initiative to encourage employees who participate as volunteers in civil society, cultural, social and environmental projects in Belgium and elsewhere.

bpost forest A partnership with Natuurpunt to protect biodiversity and plant a “bpost forest” This project was launched in association with Natuurpunt. bpost gave Natuurpunt a long lease on a plot of land in the Oude Landen area close to Ekeren. It will be used for a project to protect biodiversity and local flora. In exchange, Natuurpunt has planted a one-hectare “bpost forest” in Waver forest in Lier. The partnership was symbolically launched by Koen Van Gerven, CEO of bpost, and Walter Roggeman, president of Natuurpunt, who planted the first 300 trees in the “bpost forest” on December 10, 2014.
