3. Good health
Our people are our main capital. Safety is at the very top of our agenda wherever people are involved. No job is ever too important that it cannot be done safely. We are ITA: Imagine, Think, Act! This operational approach is our guarantee for sustainable, safe, creative and successful solutions for our projects. ‘A healthy mind in a healthy body’ is not an empty concept for our employees. We structured our initiatives under the FIT heading. Food, In balance, Training and sports is structurally embedded within the workplace.
9. Innovation and infrastructure
Innovation is an important pillar of our CSR policy. Jan De Nul Group is well aware that innovation is essential to reduce costs, to work in a sustainable manner and to find solutions to new challenges. We focus on nature based solutions: we take functions and services of ecosystems as a starting point to tackle climate problems. This means that we build with nature, not against it. We believe that circularity is key to tackle important sustainability issues. Our civil department is involved in the Green Deal Circular Construction. For our environmental division Envisan, maximum reuse is the final target in treatment of polluted soil and sediments.
11. Sustainable cities and communities
We include local communities: by engaging local companies, services and people and by training inhabitants, we generate positive effects on the local economy and welfare. With brownfield development we create sustainable surroundings by reviving underused and often polluted sites. We focus on sustainable mobility by offering our employees sustainable alternatives for the car.
13. Climate action
Jan De Nul Group takes its responsibility seriously and focuses on three different tracks: reduction of our CO2 footprint, construction of renewable energy plant and post-treatment of our vessel emissions. We reduce our CO2 footprint by giving our fleet minimal drag and by using the shortest routes. Furthermore, our dredging department Benelux has reached level 5 (the highest one!) on the CO2 performance ladder. Dredging Europe, dredging worldwide, the offshore and civil department and our environmental division are also taking steps to implement standardised verification. When designing new vessels, we focus on air quality and climate issues through the intensive treatment of their exhaust gases. We talk about ‘Ultra Low Emission Vessels’ or ULEv’s. With this system, Jan De Nul Group is an absolute pioneer.
12. Responsible consumption and production
We focus on efficient use of natural resources and we are committed to reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse. We distinguish ourselves by cleaning up polluted soil and ground water, under the baseline ‘Circular solutions for a better planet’. To make our vessels cleaner, we invest in drop in renewable fuel, which is made of waste streams. We encourage our employees not only to think in a sustainable way, but also to act accordingly by creating awareness about printing and food waste.
14. Life below water
Jan De Nul Group is aware of the impact of its activities on the quality of surface waters and their ecosystems and biodiversity. MARED, our Marine Environment Department, supports and monitors projects so that the negative impact on water quality and sensitive habitats is reduced and kept under control. After all, our employees indicate that the protection of oceans and watercourses is a top priority. That’s why we mobilize projects worldwide to organize a beach clean-up.
